Neverland

Rhys Ifans might be the criminal Jimmy Hook and Charlie Rowe is loyal follower Peter in Syfys Peter Pan prequel Neverland. Shot in Dublin and Genoa by Parallel Films regarding MNG Films in colaboration with Syfy and Sky Movies and compiled by RHI Entertainment. Executive producers, Alan Moloney, Mark Grenside, Robert Halmi Sr., Robert Halmi Junior. producer, Redmond Morris author-director, Nick Willing.Jimmy Hook - Rhys Ifans Elizabeth Bonny - Anna Friel Peter - Charlie Rowe Holy Guy - Raoul Trujillo Tiger Lilly - Q'Orianka KilcherLess a reimagining of "Peter Pan" than a more elaborate cut-and-paste job, really the only-fleetingly-spectacular "Neverland" weds J.M. Barrie's classic to aspects of "Avatar" and "Alien,Inch with dashes of "Oliver Twist" permanently measure. Some-hour Syfy miniseries signifies the newest adaptation from the beloved public-domain property compiled by RHI Entertainment, based on worldwide support to purchase an opulent fantasy featuring accomplished stars in smallish roles. To convey it's less dreadful than recent similarly designed co-productions unleashed beneath the Halmis' shingle is accurate, but furthermore qualifies as damnation with faint sprinkles of fairy dust. Written and directed by Nick Willing (who also did "Alice" and "Container Guy" for your Halmis and Syfy), the pic recasts Neverland just like a heavily wooded planet whose local fauna includes giant alligators and small tree sprites, one of these simple is Tinkerbell (voiced by Keira Knightley). People are introduced with this strange land utilizing a glowing orb, after which it trapped there, without aging, through all eternity. The disjointed citizens include pirates headed having a female captain, Elizabeth Bonny ("Pushing Daisies'" Anna Friel, terribly ill used) a gang of ragamuffins introduced by Peter (Charlie Rowe) together with a local-American tribe, whose ranks are the princess Tiger Lilly (Q'Orianka Kilcher). Finally, there's Jimmy Hook ("Anonymous'" Rhys Ifans), an early on last century London criminal whose minions include several youthful pickpockets, headed with the dashing and ingenious Peter. Loyal to Jimmy, Peter also passes using the glowing portal, but begins to doubt their connection as Jimmy occupies while using pirates and Bonny, who provides hiding for plans of employing the orb to achieve unmatched energy. As built, it comes down lower to some Peter Pan prequel lacquered tabs on a revisionist space-age fresh fresh paint job. For that cast, Ifans' callous, gimlet-eyed Jimmy might be the apparent highlight, because the cameos add a drive-by Charles Dance and Bob Hoskins as Smee, reprising the role he carried out in Steven Spielberg's "Hook." Understanding of Peter Pan works in the small as much for this, since the majority of the little twists are very telegraphed. Nor does it profit the visual effects are uneven, with flight moments that only every so often get started, and assorted CGI beasties, the most effective like a giant spider. The knowledge, similarly, is noisy and chaotic while not particularly stirring, including an interminable fight sequence near to the finish. There's no mystery surrounding why systems are drawn to individuals Halmi productions -- delivering, simply because they do, large promotable game game titles inside a lower cost, while creating enough arresting shots to yield good-searching promotions. It comes down lower to as low-risk as original programming can get, which is labored formerly. Nonetheless, "Neverland" particularly includes a considerable dose of irony. Because while one of the fantastic areas of the Peter Pan mythos might be the commitment of eternal youth, when it absolutely was finally over, I felt as if I'd aged about 10 years watching it.Camera, Seamus Deasy production designer, Amanda McArthur editor, Allan Lee music, Ronan Hardiman visual effects supervisor, Lee Wilson casting, Amy Hubbard. 4 HOURSWith: Bob Hoskins, Charles Dance, Keira Knightley (voice) Contact John Lowry at john.lowry@variety.com

Carey Mulligan on 'Shame' Casting: Offered Role Because 'I Was Getting a Tattoo'

Carey Mulligan has already proven herself as an actress. In addition to her Oscar nomination for the 2009 film, 'An Education,' she has appeared in several critically acclaimed movies, including 'Drive' and 'Never Let Me Go.' However, when it came to auditioning for the role of Sissy in the upcoming drama, 'Shame,' she took a few drastic measures in order to get cast by director Steve McQueen. After speaking to McQueen about her feelings toward the role, and how it compared to the character of Nina she played in the stage production, 'The Seagull,' Mulligan went a step further. I told [Steve] that I'd been thinking about getting this seagull tattoo on my wrist as a reminder, because there's this brilliant thing Nina does: She's had a child with this writer and she's lost the baby and she's lived in abject poverty; she's fraught but she's got this clarity, and she says, 'I know now that it's not about fame or glory or all the things I used to dream about. It's the ability to endure, to bear your cross and keep the faith. I do have faith, and when I think about my vocation, I'm not afraid of life.' ... When I told him about that little passage, he got excited and was like, 'Yeeeah!' and I'm like, 'I'll get a tattoo!' and he's like, 'Great!' I got a call a couple of hours later that he was offering me the job and I think it was only because I told him I was getting a tattoo. [Laughs] I got the tattoo the following morning. The lesson here: Don't underestimate the drastic measures some actors will go to get a role they want. Mulligan also spoke to NY Magazine about the time her and 'Drive' director Nicolas Winding Refn almost got arrested. While driving Refn to the set, the actress was pulled over -- after drinking a bunch of Red Bull for the first time ever. According to Mulligan, she told the officer "I'm not drunk I just had seventeen Red Bulls!" Luckily, the cop let them go. You can read the entire Carey Mulligan interview over on NY's website. UFC Sues to Overturn New You are able to Prohibit on Live Mma

Jason Merritt/Getty Is fighting a constitutionally-protected type of expression?our editor recommendsUFC on Fox: Exactly what the Media Says Yes, states who owns Ufc, which today filed a suit against NY authorities set on maintaining a 14-year-old prohibit from the live exhibition of mma.Zuffa, UFC's majority owner, has become set on ending this prohibit, delivering its legal punch just days after Fox grew to become the very first broadcast network to exhibit an active UFC event. Zuffa introduced the filing from the suit having a flourish today on its Twitter feed. "Hello, NY," stated the tweet, shipped just hrs after New york city police had removed out Zuccotti Park, causing outcries from Occupy Wall Street protesters. As city authorities fought against one developing First Amendment fight, these were hit with another as a suit that puts forward the concept that banning live professional MMA is really a patent breach from the U.S. Metabolic rate. Based on the complaint: "An active professional MMA event is both sport and theater. Martial artists go to town in every factor of the live show -- in the entrances they stage and also the walkout music they choose, towards the clothes they put on, to how they conduct themselves within the arena and towards their opponent. Fans come not only for that fights, but in addition for this whole unified show." The 123-page complaint provides the full good reputation for MMA and stops working the guidelines. It posits the concept that MMA is safer than a number of other sporting occasions and provides full explanations of numerous martial artists' tales. From the legal perspective, though, its most fascinating aspect may be the concept that a current Top Court decision (Brown v. Entm't Retailers Ass'n) that overturned a California prohibit on violent game titles to minors might have made NY's prohibit untenable. For the reason that decision, the Top Court discovered that game titles communicate social messages which legislatures are prohibited through the metabolic rate from creating "new groups of unguaranteed speech by simply weighing the need for a specific category against its social costs after which punishing it whether it fails the exam.Inch Zuffa has had our prime court's message to heart, crafting a suit that puts this problem in the forefront. The litigants state that the NY prohibit can no more be "justified according to antipathy to MMA's allegedly 'violent' message." Oddly enough, Zuffa also states when the NY prohibit is "read literally," it might affect media broadcasts and coverage of professional MMA. On Saturday evening, Fox broadcast the network debut of UFC to national audiences, including individuals in NY. The network wasn't scared by possible criminal action and even got compensated. Amy George

A C & Y production. Produced by Yonah Lewis, Calvin Thomas. Executive producer, Connor Jessup. Directed, written edited by Yonah Lewis, Calvin Thomas. With: Gabriel del Castillo Mullally, Claudia Dey, Don Kerr, Natasha Allan, Emily Henry, Candice Barkin, Yaari Magenheim, Brian Scott, Andrea Verginella, Ester Reyes. If ever an example were needed of why freshman helmers shouldn't also be producers, scripters, lensers and editors, it's "Amy George." Reveling in a wearisome grunge indie aesthetic, co-everythings Yonah Lewis and Calvin Thomas revisit a not-so-distant adolescence via their protag, 13, feeling a hormonal pull. Self-indulgent and underwritten, this mood piece struggles to evoke the sexual yearnings of the average teen, but emerges as another charmless Holden Caulfield knockoff. World preemed at the Wisconsin fest in April, the pic will likely play more fests before turning up on streaming sites. A class assignment to take a self-portrait without literally incorporating the self stumps Jesse (Gabriel del Castillo Mullally), but when he reads "You can never be a real artist until you've made love to a woman," the sentiment ties in perfectly with his burgeoning randiness. He climbs a tree and snaps shots of new neighbor Amy (Emily Henry), who acts annoyed but enjoys the attention. Other interactions are less clear: Do Jesse's parents (Claudia Dey and Don Kerr) have jobs? Muddy visuals reflect the low budget, though the shaky camera and insistent piano banging can't be similarly excused.Camera (color, HD), Yonah Lewis, Thomas; music, Lev Lewis, Michael Holt; production designer, Andrea Leigh Pelletier; costume designer, Maerin Hunting. CNN introduced the elimination having a minimum of 50 staff positions Friday because the organization follows through round the final results of the 3-year review that found technical advances reduced the requirement of several posts for instance photography fanatics and editors. Lay offs include CNN's Atlanta headquarters, Gotham, Washington, La and Miami no less than twelve cuts vary from news org's D.C. operation. The Turner news cabler remains "analyzing the way in which we utilize and deploy photojournalists," senior V . p . Jack Womack written inside an email to staff in the review. Really fraxel remedies is within reach of increasing numbers of people. After finishing this analysis, CNN determined that some photojournalists will probably be departing the business.Inch The same paragraph referred to that greater-tech editing software allowed more remote editing, and for that reason known for less editors. Worldwide, CNN has received two zero-sum reorgs since August, neither which brought to headcount deficits. But this latest round differs because laid-off staffers weren't requested to get lately created jobs within the division. In October, their Atlanta office removed after which it immediately hired for roughly the identical volume of positions -- a bit more, really -- and needed staffers in flux with the idea to accept severance or re-make an application for roles with bigger job explanations. The same restructuring -- also with no resulting decrease in headcount -- happened at CNN sister internet HLN in August, as that network ramped around the launch of web initiative HLNtv. It seems in my opinion that youngsters in addition to their connected parents will consider the large the majority of ticket sales, as they are always the problem with animated films, but Vital demands that it's going to have crossover appeal and draw a substantial volume of grownups on their own, particularly see how to avoid that the foundation material needs to be familiar to people from the certain age. I'll have to notice to totally accept it, however they could be right. VIDEO: The Adventures of Tintin: Trailer 2 What's beyond any shadow from the doubt, though, is always that Spielberg is not just probably the most revered filmmakers of his era, but furthermore probably the most creatively curious and ambitious. Why else would he undertake the immense challenge of making a film from the sort he'd no time before attempted (animated) using technology that he'd no time before performed around with (motion-capture) and delivering it in the format he'd no time before employed (3-D) except from the soul mates for researching and practicing the craft of filmmaking? UPDATE: Dish Network Disappointed By Studio Efforts To Produce Blockbuster Watch Out For Videos

UPDATE, 10:55 AM: Dish Network Boss Joe Clayton was clearly talking about Warner Bros, although he didn’t single the studio out by title in the organization’s business call with experts. Warners desires to make Blockbuster wait 4 days for completely new home videos, leading the rental operation that Dish bought in April to go to outdoors target buy Digital video disks of WB’s Horrible Bosses and Eco-friendly Lantern. The studio withheld them, largely to help its efforts to market VOD andsales of latest dvd disks including UltraViolet’s digital streamsto Computer systems and mobile items. That “creates some challenges,” Clayton states –adding that Blockbuster rental costs improve promotion for films simply because they go to TV together with other areas. For that primary satellite video business, Clayton states:”Progress is created inside the third quarter. Maybe it had been enough? No.” He vowed to step-up Dish’s marketing, they states “needed most likely probably the most work,” adding he’s “cautiously positive” there’ll be progress in 4Q. Chairman Charlie Ergen mentioned that DirecTV’s strong 3Q results the other day suggests that “there’s still a sizable business readily available for satellite television around the stand-alone basis…. We’re not getting our great deal.” Dish would consider offering less pricey video packages. “I’m a sizable believer to get step-up selling, good-better-best,” Clayton states. That could mean offering clients the option tobuy programming that doesn’t include pricey sport shows. “Sports programming may be 20% in the viewing, nevertheless it’s 50% from the products the client pays,” Ergen states. “There’s a set limit to where sports costs goes. It’s not necessarily in 90% in the houses once the costs go excessive.” Programming pricing is also rising as tv producers seek new or greater retransmission consent obligations from pay TV companies. Ergen doesn’t believe federal government bodies can do everything to limit that. “Washington can’t fix your financial allowance as well as the retrans problem,” according to him. “When (pay TV)can get too pricey, people will steal it.” Dish can’t have the ability to raise prices at this time around, nevertheless it can happen and “there’s a set limit for the cost increases that are passed to clients.” But experts were mostly considering Ergen’s expects to create wireless spectrum for just about any TV, broadband, and speak to product which may enable clients to avoid getting anything associated with their local cable or phone companies. Dish delays for your FCC to approve numerous its wireless purchases. “My expectation is always that in relatively short order we have to see approval” although possibly having a couple of conditions, Ergen states. “If we’re inside the video business we must maintain mobile too.” If government physiques approve then “it would put us in the decent spectrum position” to simply accept next factor. However when they don’t, or conditions are very troublesome, then “we usually takes a loss of profits. … They wish to start to see the United states . States be described as a leader in wireless, not just a follower. For the us government at their word, we’ve developed a large wager.” Dish want a effective partner to help it succeed. Once the government allows AT&T to buy T-Mobile, “then I wouldn’t go to whichever challenge with us merging with DirecTV,” Ergen states. Even though it “wouldn’t be my first choice,” he adds that Dish is “prepared to go in wireless by ourselves once we have (FCC) approval together with a guide to compete.” There’s no returning, though. “Strategically we're feeling we should maintain something aside from a stand-alone video business just like a company.”He states that about 20% of Dish clients also subscribe to Netflix, and people that frequently drop premium services including Cinemax, Showtime and Starz. Many youthful people also don’t buy pay TV, they are browsing on the internet and “just search until they find something they wish to watch.” That’s a “long-term, macro threat for the industry” together with the additional pressure from the weakening economy “it’s a lot of fun to change your company.”Ergen states that “all people inside the video business want at streaming video” nevertheless the danger for companies for instance Netflix is always that usage costs could soar as cable and speak to broadband companies begin to charge greater prices to clients who use plenty of bandwidth. “That’s why I really like wireless,” Ergen states. PREVIOUS, 3:47 AM: Experts feared that Dish Network will be lighter in comparison as to the they’d forecast after they saw how good DirecTV did having its Nfl Sunday Ticket promotion reducing-than-expected sub deficits at Comcast together with other cable operators. Dish ended 3Q with internet gain of $319.1M, up 30.2% at that time a year ago, on revenues of $3.6B, up 12.3%. That revenue figure only decided to be slightly under the $3.65B the street forecasted. But earnings, at 71 cents a share, missed experts’ target of 73 cents. The big questions today will in all probability focus on the 111,000 drop in monthly monthly subscriptions to 13.95M — that comes even close to a 29,000 insufficient subs inside the same period a year ago. Just before the current run of 3Q bulletins from Dish’s rivals, Brean Murray Carret analyst Todd Mitchell predicted the organization would lose 25,000 clients and Credit Suisse’ Stefan Anninger forecast a tiny bit of 87,000. On Friday, Anninger modified his projection to -174,000. “We spoken with a traders which in fact had anticipated a loss of profits between 150k to 200k (after DirecTV revealed its) results the other day so overall, we'd say this is not badly as feared,” states Wells Fargo Opportunities analyst Marci Ryvicker. Dish credited losing to competitive demands additionally to “the weak housing marketplace inside the U.S. combined with lower discretionary trading.” Dish states that Blockbuster, therefore it acquired in April, stood a internet insufficient $177,000 on revenues of $347M but didn’t provide a comparison with previous years, proclaiming that the operation has changed so muchit “would not prove useful in assessing our publish acquisition earnings and money flows.” Blockbuster operated 1,500 stores through the finish of September. “We have talked about flexible termination provisions inside the rents more than 900 of individuals stores, should estimations of future revenue growth not meet our anticipation,” Dish states. The business also introduced today that it's going to pay a non-recurring dividend of $2 a share. That news “not only signifies a welcome return of cash to traders but furthermore signals that Chairman Charlie Ergen isn’t prone to hoard cash to build his wireless section of dreams (probably),” states Bernstein Research analyst Craig Moffett.
